The internal sources of Meta-owned Facebook have revealed that Facebook is losing interest in its podcasting plans. With Facebook focused on events in metaverse and e-commerce, it’s clearly pursuing other opportunities with podcast patterns.

A report by TechCrunch revealed that after pulling back from its incursion in podcasting, Facebook is prioritizing other initiatives with its podcast partners such as short video projects over other initiatives. This genre needs special attention due to stiff competition from popular short-form video apps such as TikTok.

Facebook is building audio features into the platform. This latest move comes to no surprise as the social media giant is said to be exploring ways of expanding its presence in the podcasting scene.

Facebook is doubling down on audio. The company announced today that it has updated the audio feature on Facebook Stories and Messenger Day with a library of more than five thousand sound effects, making the tool "more fun to use" while also adding several new features. In addition, Facebook is also launching what it is calling its first original podcast aimed at promoting "global connectivity."

Facebook recently unveiled several audio products including offering a short-form experience called Soundbites & the arrival of podcasts on its main platform.

Soundbites are creative audio clips for capturing anecdotes, moments of inspiration, jokes, poems, and other forms of content that are short-from.

Facebook is offering an Audio Creator Fund - grants of $10,000 each to 30 people and one class of 20 students - to help creators get started on Soundbites. They are running this program in partnership with SoundCloud. Facebook also has a creator lab class at the NYC media lab that starts on 9/25, and is currently accepting applicants.
