Sonoma County And Ibm Working Together To Change Lives

This case study shares the story of Sandy Beech, a Sonoma County resident who faced compounded challenges of homelessness, chronic health issues, and trauma after fleeing an unsafe home environment. With limited income and no support network in her new community, Sandy struggled to access affordable housing or connect with local resources. When the devastating 2017 Sonoma Complex Fires displaced thousands, Sandy’s circumstances grew even more dire. Although temporary shelters offered immediate relief, closures soon after left her and many others without long-term solutions.

The story underscores the strain on county safety-net systems when disaster amplifies existing issues of housing insecurity and health vulnerabilities. Sonoma County officials had already recognized the need for integrated, multi-disciplinary approaches to address such complex cases, but the urgency became far greater in the fire’s aftermath. This example illustrates how systemic challenges—economic stress, housing instability, trauma, and external crises—intersect to perpetuate chronic homelessness.
