OpenAI’s ChatGPT Ads Reach $1 Billion Annualized Revenue Run Rate
OpenAI’s ChatGPT ads business reaches a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate, marking a major milestone in AI-powered advertising growth.
The milestone comes less than 200 days after launch as OpenAI expands self-service advertising across global markets.
September 1, 2026: OpenAI said on Monday that ChatGPT Ads has reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate less than 200 days after the company launched its ad program, signaling rapid early growth for a business that is becoming another monetization channel for the AI platform.
OpenAI said ChatGPT Ads is now used by tens of thousands of advertisers and is available in more than 40 countries. The company is also expanding self-service ad buying through Ads Manager across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.
“We’re at the beginning of a new chapter for advertising, with AI creating entirely new ways for businesses and people to discover one another. Reaching $1 billion in ARR in under 200 days shows the scale of the opportunity ahead,” said Dave Dugan, vice president of global ad solutions at OpenAI.
The $1 billion figure is an annualized run rate, the advertising revenue already collected during 2026. The metric reflects the pace of revenue at a particular point in time if that pace were sustained for a full year. OpenAI did not disclose the precise calculation period or methodology behind the figure.
OpenAI’s advertising business has grown quickly since its U.S. pilot began in February. Reuters reported in March that the initial U.S. program had surpassed a $100 million annualized revenue run rate within six weeks.
OpenAI introduced its self-service Ads Manager in May, allowing advertisers to create and manage campaigns directly. The platform supports tools including CPC and outcome-optimized bidding, geographic targeting and conversion measurement. OpenAI said CPC and outcome-optimized campaigns now account for the majority of campaigns.
The model also differs from conventional keyword advertising. OpenAI says its system can consider the context and intent of a conversation when determining which advertisements are relevant. Ads are presented separately from ChatGPT’s responses and clearly labeled as sponsored content.
“This is the rare moment when a major ad channel is still wide open. The advertisers who can see what’s happening with AI ads now will have a real head start. Until today, nobody could see it at all,” said Harel Amir, general manager and head of product for Ad Intelligence, at Similarweb.
The rapid growth comes as advertising projections for OpenAI extend far beyond the current run rate. Axios reported in April that OpenAI was projecting $2.5 billion in advertising revenue for 2026 and $100 billion by 2030, citing a person familiar with investor presentations. Those are projections, not reported financial results.
For now, the $1 billion milestone highlights the speed at which advertising demand for ChatGPT has grown. But whether that revenue translates into a profitable business remains unanswered: OpenAI has not disclosed advertising-specific margins, costs or profit.
The more consequential test will be whether OpenAI can scale advertising while maintaining a clear separation between sponsored content and the answers users rely on. The challenge will be turning conversational intent into a durable advertising business without compromising trust.
