Instagram introduced an “AI-generated profile” label for accounts representing artificial intelligence-generated people on August 31, 2026, according to Instagram’s official announcement. Profiles that should carry the disclosure but do not may become ineligible for recommendations.

The change applies to Instagram AI-generated profiles that regularly feature an AI-generated person rather than a real human and replaces the platform’s earlier “AI creator” label. Creators using AI for editing, graphics, or other parts of content production do not need the account-level label solely for using those tools.

Instagram said the previous wording could create confusion between human creators who use AI tools and profiles where the person represented by the account is AI-generated. The new wording is intended to make that distinction clearer.

Its Help Center guidance says the label is intended for accounts that regularly post content featuring an AI-generated person instead of a real human.

Key Facts

  • Instagram renamed “AI creator” to “AI-generated profile.”
  • The label applies to profiles representing AI-generated people.
  • General use of AI for editing or content creation does not automatically require the profile-level label.
  • Accounts that should use the label but do not may lose recommendation eligibility.
  • Creators who add the correct label are not expected to lose reach simply for using it.

If Instagram detects an unlabeled profile that it believes represents an AI-generated person, the creator can be notified and check Account Status to see whether the profile has become ineligible for recommendations. The creator can then add the label or appeal the classification. If an appeal succeeds, the profile and its content can become eligible for recommendations again.

The stated consequence is therefore primarily about recommendation eligibility, not a ban on AI-generated profiles. Instagram’s announcement does not describe account deletion or suspension as the penalty for failing to use the label.

The label also operates at the profile level, distinguishing who or what the account represents from Meta’s separate labels for individual pieces of AI-generated or AI-edited media. Instagram says the profile label may also appear alongside content when that specific media does not already carry an AI-related label.

The update fits within Meta’s broader effort to identify AI-generated content across its platforms. Meta has previously outlined how it uses technical signals, metadata, and industry standards to label certain AI-generated images, audio, and video.

The shift also comes as AI transparency requirements become more formalized in other markets, including under the European Union Artificial Intelligence Act (EU AI Act) transparency rules.

For B2B marketers and brands using virtual influencers or synthetic personas, the change makes AI disclosure part of campaign planning and creator strategy. If Instagram decides a profile should carry the label and it does not, that account may lose recommendation eligibility and organic discovery among non-followers. That gives marketers another factor to consider when assessing brand safety, expected reach, and the role of synthetic creators in social campaigns.
